PECULIAR PEOPLE

We are the most interesting people on the planet
At a glance one will be tempted to think
That we possess dual personality
Otherwise how do you explain the following: -

We go to the streets, we holler, we demonstrate,
We cause rumpus
All in the name of agitating
For multiparty system of government,
Fifteen years later,
And we are clamouring
For a government of national unity (one party system)

We condemn tribalism and nepotism
But we do not mind
When we are the beneficiaries
We condemn those who dare oppose our tribal chiefs as traitors
Come elections
And as sheep we vote in one direction

We say malicious things
About people from other communities (tribes)
Yet we dine and wine with them, we go church together and we even intermarry!

We preach against corruption from the rooftops
Yet we love the corrupt
We elect them to local councils and parliament
We give them front rows in our places of worship
And we do not mind receiving their gifts!
Or do we hate the sin but love the sinner?

Our leaders hurl insults and threaten each other
But tomorrow
They are in the same coalition, alliance or movement
And there are all smiles
And we as spectators do not notice the incongruity!

We are a peculiar people
We are Kenyans!
